The dream of flying. Man’s eternal desire.
An apparent dichotomy separates human nature from that of birds, who partake of the sky in so far as they inhabit and traverse it in flight. Truly speaking the two differ only in their physical characteristics and most certainly not in terms of potential or mission.
The show is a metaphor where flight represents a process of evolution: the individual’s quest for internal growth and self-awareness.
Livingston is a winged creature who wants to leave his flock in search of independence and autonomy. He joins a new, more highly developed, flock, with whom he encounters crucial new experiences. He meets the wise Lightbird and helps Brokenwing, a fellow creature in difficulty. His dream comes true: with his companions he experiences final enlightenment, the gift of light.
The set design, a composite metal structure which intentionally takes up the entire stage, seems at first to be an insurmountable obstacle, a sort of cage which reflects the narrow-mindedness of the original flock. But the structure itself gradually becomes an important mainstay for the more highly developed winged creatures; it allows them to perform extraordinary, fascinating manoeuvres: all uncertainty and limits disappear.
The story, structured around a series of scenes, moves and enthralls the audience by the sheer force and intensity of the choral movements which hide depths of touching delicacy. This lightness of gesture is clearly seen in the agility and physical prowess of the dancers, who leap from one level of the structure to another, only to remain suspended in mid-air.
The music scores, with their cinematic function of highlighting the gestures and expressions of the dancers, were composed for the show by Andrea Pozzoli and were also conceived for live orchestra performance. They trace man’s striving after spiritual elevation across different continents, epochs and cultures, fusing tribal sonorities and aboriginal strains with the sounds of modern technologies.
